Understanding Leda

Understanding Leda is a painting about forbidden love. In the painting, the Greek god Zeus, who has transformed himself into a swan, has managed to seduce the hapless mortal Leda. It begs the viewer to wonder how such a bestial union could have occurred between even a god and a mere mortal since by all accounts Zeus transformed himself into a bird. Leda is represented by a doe to bridge this gap in understanding, likening her to another forest beast better suited to accept the advances of a transmogrified deity.
